RIET VAN LYSEBETTENS

Riet is a 26-year-old graphic designer, currently completing a master’s in Graphic Design at KASK. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts, specializing in printmaking, as well as a bachelor’s degree in Education (Biology and Art Education).

Her work often takes the form of publications, where material, texture, and rhythm play a central role. Sometimes a theme guides the process, but just as often the paper or technique itself determines the direction.

WORK

1.Cover Design for De Geus

This cover was selected through the open call Steek je nek uit by Het Geuzenhuis. The jury praised the collage of watercolours for its artistic value, poetic strength, and gentle approach to activism. The work avoids loud statements, instead balancing quietly between beauty and unease, shaped by careful observation of the world around us.
2025

2. Publications
A selection of self-made publications, ranging from drawing-based booklets to text-driven works and hybrids of both. Each piece is entirely crafted by hand—writing, illustrating, designing, printing, and binding. Highlights include a reinterpretation of Machiavelli’s Il Principe, reshaped into poems addressed to Belgium’s Crown Princess Elisabeth, written in Dutch, French, or German depending on the chapter.
2024–2025

3. Exhibitions & Presentations Works presented during group exhibitions and presentations on the Bijloke site in Gent. These images document how publications, prints, and installations take on new lives in a shared space with viewers.
2024–2025

4. Cliona patera
A publication inspired by the Neptune Cup from the GUM collection, created for the course Artscience, taught by Joost Rekveld. The project unfolds in four parts, reflecting on the idea of ‘truth’ in science. One of its sections gives the cup itself a voice through a fictional monologue, blurring the line between fact and imagination.

5. Zines for the Kunstenbibliotheek FestivalThree zines, each 20 pages, created within a single week for the Zine Festival at the Kunstenbibliotheek (Bijloke). Each zine reimagines a film—The Colour of Pomegranates, The Taste of Tea, and La Grande Bellezza—through drawings, rhythm, and handmade structures.

6. Studio Practises
A glimpse into different working processes: etching with an Axidraw, printing monotypes from inked stones, laser-cutting acrylic mirrors, and preparing lithographic stones. The practise combines traditional techniques with experimental methods, always rooted in material exploration.

7. Digital PostersA series of posters combining photography and digitised watercolours. Images and design come together in layered compositions that merge personal perspective with graphic precision.
2024–2025

8. Walk Away
Fragments from the publication Walk Away, a work about women caught in situations that confine them, yet striving to move forward. Through text and image, the book explores resilience, tension, and the desire for change.
2024

9. Works in Various TechniquesPieces created in a wide range of methods: airbrush, monotypes with printing ink, oil paint, wet-on-wet ink, drypoint and woodcut. These works highlight the diversity of graphic experiments and the continuous search for texture and rhythm.
